Post-16 Citizenship activity at Aylesbury High School

Picture of learners doing flip chart activityCitizenship activities are numerous and varied.  There is a school council and a house system, all students take part in community involvement and they have a tutorial programme and a current issues programme of visiting speakers. Volunteers forge links with partner schools in Kenya and India and peer mentors prepare and deliver lessons on drug education, political literacy and citizenship to younger learners, often creating their own teaching materials. Students from Years 12 and 13 continue to build the Citizenship internet site, and they plan and run conferences for Post-16 learners in the Aylesbury area on such topics as 'Breaking down Barriers' and 'Making a Difference'. AS Citizenship is offered to everyone in the Sixth Form and during 2005 - 06 AHS helped to trial the AQA AS Active Citizenship exam.

Citizenship coordinator's top tips for setting up post-16 citizenship activity:

  • Consult with young people about the issues that are important to them
  • Make the sessions/lessons as interactive and student-led as possible
  • Give students ownership of their activities
  • Build QCA assessment objectives into teaching and learning strategies
  • Allow time for reflection and evaluation

How this organisation could help you:

We would be happy to create a local liaison group where we would meet on a regular basis and share good practice. We would like to invite colleagues to visit/observe and to share in our own in-house staff development sessions. We could also offer custom-built staff development sessions in other organisations. We could offer advice and mentoring to those considering offering the pilot in AS Active Citizenship to their students. We invite students from other organisations to attend our conferences and events. For more information view the Aylesbury High School leaflet on post-16 citizenship.
