Bishop's Hatfield Girls School
Post-16 Citizenship activity at Bishop's Hatfield Girls School
There are three complementary and mutually supportive strands to the citizenship provision at Bishop’s Hatfield Girls’ School, as follows:
Taught citizenship. The citizenship programme is delivered to students in Years 12 and 13 through an area of the curriculum we call Life Skills. Within Life Skills 3 distinct subjects are taught - Careers Education, Citizenship Education and Personal, Social and Health Education. One hour and forty minutes per week is devoted to this in Year 12 and fifty minutes a week in Year 13. The citizenship input is varied and builds on prior citizenship learning.
Community Service. All students in Year 12 undertake community service for at least one afternoon a week and we link this to the Millennium Volunteers Award scheme. The school year begins with a volunteers fair, where a range of organisations are represented, in order to establish links and raise awareness.
Student voice / political literacy. The school has a tradition of students taking responsibility, getting involved and making a difference and the 6th Form takes a lead on much of this work. Sixth Formers run the school council, controlling a budget of £5,000. They also run the charity committee, co-ordinating all of our fund-raising activities. Sixth formers act as representatives for the rest of the student population on a number of decision-making bodies and have the opportunity to influence policy and practice.
Citizenship coordinator's top tips for setting up post-16 citizenship activity:
- Involve students in curriculum planning
- Make learning active and experiential
- Give a very clear brief to any external organisations you want to get involved in the delivery of citizenship
- Recognise achievement and celebrate succes
- Publicise what you are doing, raise awareness and therefore the profile of citizenship
How this organisation could help you:
We would like to set up a local network of schools in order to work collaboratively, share good practice and promote post-16 citizenship. We are also happy to work beyond our immediate locality and the school has a tradition of sharing practice from its experiences as a Beacon school. We are keen for people to contact us to ask for support, visit the school, obtain resources and ideas etc.
