Post-16 Citizenship activity at Coulsdon College
Coulsdon College is committed to providing students with a full and balanced education entitlement. This includes delivery of citizenship education within, and in addition to, their chosen discipline studies. The aims of citizenship within Coulsdon College are to:
- Develop learners self confidence and decision making skills
- Recognise and enquire about the differences, injustices, rights and responsibilities within students’ own and the wider community and celebrate difference
- Gain an appreciation of the necessary part students play within the college and the wider community
- Learn about institutions, issues, problems, opinions and practices that form the culture and fabric of our society
- Experience and reflect on events that take students away from their usual routines and pedagogies
The benefits to students of undertaking citizenship education in Coulsdon College include:
- Gaining the knowledge, skills and understanding to play an effective role in society at local, national and international levels
- Helping students become informed, thoughtful and responsible citizens who are aware of their duties and rights
- Promoting spiritual, moral, social and cultural development, making students more self confident and responsible both in and beyond the classroom
- Encouraging students to play a helpful part in the life of their college, neighbourhoods, communities and the wider society
- Teaching students about our economy and democratic institutions and the mechanisms that exist for them to influence these
- Encouraging respect for difference and celebrate the national, religious and ethnic diversity within our society
Citizenship coordinator's top tips for setting up post-16 citizenship activity:
- Have loads of lesson or tutorial activities prepared for tutors and teachers to use
- Meet regularly with other teachers and a senior manager to discuss citizenship issues and delivery
- Start your planning early for the following year. By September - December it is too late to get anything off the ground
- Get a core of trustworthy students on-side early on and reward them regularly for their efforts
- Have a clear outline of the assessment strategies that are to be used.
