Exmouth Community College

Post-16 Citizenship activity at Exmouth Community College

Exmouth studentsExmouth Community College is a large 11-18 comprehensive school in East Devon with over 2500 students. The sixth form has over 400 students who study a range of level 2 and 3 courses.

Citizenship is delivered by the Social Science Department, as well as providing input into the core personal development programme in Years 12 and 13 and stand alone-citizenship events. Citizenship is part of our level 2 and 3 taught programme.

All Level 2 students follow courses that include the GCSE short course citizenship award offered by AQA which involves students in group active citizenship tasks. Level 3 students can either choose AQA GCE AS Social Science Citizenship as an open option choice or as an additional course if they are following either; GCE Politics, Sociology or Law in Year 12.

The college has also been piloting the new Level 3 Extended Project in Active Citizenship. This has enabled students to develop a range of citizenship research and action led activities. This option is available currently to Social Science subject based students, but it is hoped to widen this to all Level 3 students in future

This year the students are working with NGO partners to set up a whole Post-16 event day running citizenship workshops based upon their Extended Project tasks. The teaching team involved are teachers of Law, Sociology, Politics and two are Citizenship specialists.

The College also works very closely with the University of Plymouth whose PGCE Secondary Citizenship trainees act as mentors to students undertaking the extended project.

The College has underpinned its citizenship programme with the use of external qualifications this has enabled the subject to gain status within the college as well as being a major contributor to Post-16 funding. The qualifications offered have given creditability to the subject in the eyes of the students and for many has enhanced their academic CVs and assisted them in gaining entrance to Higher Education. For many Level 2 students it has given them the confidence to remain at the college and undertake Level 3 courses and continue their interest in citizenship.
