Post-16 Citizenship activity at Lincoln College

Picture of Lincoln College studentsStudents studying at Lincoln College are able to participate in representative processes such as Student Union councils and the citizenship team is currently investigating ways to introduce additional active citizenship opportunities focussing on volunteering and activities within the student community that engender interest and instil a sense of purpose and involvement. Post-16 citizenship delivery is through a well-developed tutorial programme through which students receive accreditation. The citizenship coordinator at the college is working closely with the citizenship team to develop a broader understanding of active citizenship among staff and young people.

The citizenship coordinator at Lincoln College has been involved in delivering a regional post-16 citizenship networking event inviting all partner colleges and sixth forms in the country such as Grantham College and other organisations that have direct contact with the college and providing college tutors who deliver citizenship to reflect on their experiences and share good practice with other interested post-16 providers and organisations such as youth services and Connexions.

Staff development has also been an important aspect of developing effective post-16 citizenship provision. An internal staff development day for tutors who are teaching on the AQA Social Science: Citizenship programme was held to review what has been accomplished since the introduction of this topic into the college's curriculum in 2003. The day was also an opportunity to review materials and resources to encourage active student engagement and participation. The production of handbooks and activities allows students to become actively involved by extending the materials and their interests further. Staff will also have the opportunity to take part in a follow up day once materials and research have been undertaken.

Citizenship coordinator's top tips for setting up post-16 citizenship activity:

1) Decide upon your model e.g. qualification or enrichment-led and then determine how many staff will be needed to operate post-16 citizenship

2) Obtain support from senior staff so that the strategic decisions can be accommodated

3) If like Lincoln College you decide upon a qualification-led model ensure you have materials and resources that engage students as well as inform them of what it means to be an active, participating citizen

4) Ensure you have adequate time to reflect upon progress and the flexibility to make the required changes

5) Identify all the opportunities that naturally occur in education for student participation e.g. SU involvement, student representation at meetings

How this organisation could help you:

We are happy to extend an invitation to share good practice with other colleges while still recognising that we ourselves learning all the time. We have produced a great deal of material over the last three years which we are able to share with colleges opting for the qualification-led route although from 2008 the modules are changing.

We are happy to receive contact from other institutions who may wish to visit and discuss the delivery of post-16 citizenship.
