Post-16 Citizenship activity at the East Northamptonshire College
- CIVITAS conference - 10 Level 3 students attended conference discussing Britain and the EU. This was followed up in lessons afterwards.
- Holocaust – Auschwitz trip plus one pre and one post seminar attended by 6 students and 4 members of staff. Workshops carried out within sixth form and assembly slots with lower school. Displays set up and information circulated whereby Year 9 drama and RS workshops set up.
- Year 12 Citizenship Conference - all students involved in workshops covering fair trading, food content and exercise. Post-conference evaluation completed, analysed and posted on the website.
- Community Leadership / placements- completed regularly by all Year 12 Level 3 and incorporated into work experience level 2.
- Millennium Volunteers - several Level 3 students signed up following assembly by Millennium Volunteers to have their Community Leadership certificated.
- Rotary Public speaking competition - 12 Level 3 students, 3 from each school researched and discussed a range of topical political issues-judged and assessed by rotary club members and feedback given to participants on their speaking/research.
- Through PSHE all students attend and receive information and participate in activities such as charity awarness and fund raising, evaluating their Community Leadership by assessing the skills developed and the impact their contribution has had students take part in school council elections.
- Sixth Form Committee - form representatives meet regularly to bring forms views together and discuss ways to improve Sixth Form and charity fundraising.
- General Studies- discussions, presentations and visiting speakers on political issues such as fair-trade.
- AS AQA Citizenship piloted at one school with 4 students. Two students involved in the Citizenship conference, one on the Holocaust and the other focusing on political groups and the role they play in schools.
- Conference Steering group - met regularly to plan prepare and run a citizenship conference.
- Anti-Bullying Training given to Year 12 students who then present themselves and the scheme to a Year 7, 8 and 9 assembly in order to provide a way for lower school students to deal with being bullied and its effects.
- 4 students took part in the LSN 'Voice your view through music’ citizenship workshop and competition.
Citizenship coordinator's top tips for setting up post-16 citizenship activity:
- Need a dynamic co-ordinator in each establishment in the partnership
- Build into PSHCE/General Studies programme
- Acknowledge, reward & celebrate the achievement of the students
- Must have senior management support
