Broadlands County Training Service video recording progression in citizenship learning project
A post-16 citizenship champion project Broadlands County Training Service (BCTS) undertook a pilot project to use innovative methods of recording and evaluating progression of soft outcomes of a hard to reach client group.
Aims of activity
- Recording and evaluating soft outcomes for both learner and organisation
- To encourage young people to reflect on progression through citizenship
- Break down barriers such as literacy issues in recording progression
- Opportunity for learners to witness the development of themselves and the impact active citizenship can achieve over a period of time
The project proposed to use video recording themed around a ‘diary room’ for learners’ initial assessment, reviews and action plans. Using political literacy through active citizenship, staff planned to identify learners’ level of knowledge and ability at the beginning of a programme, record progression then feedback, evaluate and reflect on learners’ journey. Each individuals’ journey will be downloaded onto the server into their own unique site that will be password accessible only. This journey of progression can then be used to celebrate achievements, raise future aspirations, and help identify individuals’ strengths and knowledge gained. Using this model a young person could build a profile of achievement and staff could visually summarise learners’ outcomes.
Video recording has been used at BCTS and a diary room is under development pending updating and expansion of existing facilities. Initial six students were signed up to the pilot programme. Through the video recording staff were able to identify each learner’s level of knowledge and ability. Using themes such as political literacy through active citizenship the evaluation process was started with opportunities for each learner to reflect on their journey. Information continues to be collected for each individual’s journey to be uploaded to their online record.
There will be a final evaluation of the information collected and the outcomes of this pilot project when the six students finish their provision in late August 2007. This information (subject to date protection) will be documented and available online for the benefit of other organisations in the use of recording and evaluating soft outcomes.
