Citizenship in the Community Conference

ACitizenship in the Community Conference’ took place on 26 April 2007 in London which aimed to

  • provide information about community groups and external agencies that can help with the delivery of post-16 citizenship
  • provide materials for use with post-16 learners
  • inspire ideas for projects and activities
  • give the opportunity to make useful contacts and network

This small conference organised by member of the London post-16 citizenship regional network showcased how post-16 learners and community organisations can successfully work together on citizenship projects. The programme for the conference included a keynote speech from Bridget Prentice MP, the Democracy Minister at the Department for Constitutional Affairs (now part of the Ministry of Justice) and delegates took part in a forum theatre session around citizenship through drama by the Eastside Educational Trust. Six workshops were delivered by:

Delegates also attended a talk by Peter Hayes of CSV about setting up partnerships with community groups. This this was followed by three members of the Lewisham Young Mayors’ young advisors holding a question and answer session.

All the workshops focused on demonstrating how to actively involve students in citizenship activities and the Coulsdon College workshop was actually delivered by students themselves. The emphasis was on how making links with outside organisations is vital in making citizenship work in post-16 settings.
