Post-16 Citizenship activity at Fareport Training Organisation

Always keen to implement new ideas and promote good practice within the organsiation, across local networks and nationally, our Citizenship pilot project began working with a local college, EBP and the Youth Service to give added value to our youth programmes. Since 2002 we have delivered Citizenship through our e2e programme to encourage young people to develop skills that have sucessfully helped them to enter work, apprenticeships and FE.

We deliver Citizenship through regular learner led sessions, addressing local and national issues, and involve young people carrying out research and preparation work, and in many cases delivering this information to peers.  This work has been used to develop literacy, numeracy and ICT skills and has positively impacted on learners attitudes towards personal development. Many learners have gained formal qualifications through their Citizenship work. Subject covered includes:

  • Consequences of crime
  • The Death Penality
  • Fair Trade
  • Terrorism in the World
  • Drugs and Alcohol

We encourage individuals to be 'active citizens' and Fareport has found that by encouraging participation in local and national conferences, as well as debate days with the local college they can see that their voice is being heard. We network with local and LSN partners to give young people an opportunity to show their ideas and opinions in creative ways.

Fareport learners have received awards in the 'It’s Your Europe' Film competition and 'Citizenhip through Music' competition.  They also wrote and performed a play about recylcing at London's Royal Festival Hall. The opportunities gave the young people the chance to participate in exciting and stimulating events.

We have also have 'out-side speakers'  and learner feedback has shown this to be both very popular and informative.

Citizenship coordinator's top tips for setting up post-16 citizenship activity:

  • To empower the young people to deliver and plan the Citizenship project. If the young people own the project they will learn and achieve.
  • Encourage staff to be active citizens themselves. They will then see the value of the programme and lead by example
  • Be consistent in your delivery, if it fails at first be patient but remember consultation and evaluation from the young people is the key to a sucessful project.
  • Make sure your senior manangement is behind the project, involve them in the activites and events.
  • Celebrate achievement, however great or small - everyone has different goals and abilities but everyone likes to be praised for moving forward or doing well.

How this organisation could help you:

Image of learners engaged in group work activityOther organisations are welcome to visit and observe our delivery of Citizenship. Resources can be made available to look through and learners are always willing to discuss what they have enjoyed and achieved on the programme. We have a good library of past events available including DVDs and a back record of contacts if organisations wanted to organise outside speakers, trips etc. For more information see also the Fareport Training Organisation leaflet on post-16 citizenship delivery.
