Hull Lifelong Learning

Post-16 Citizenship activity at Hull Lifelong Learning

Our organisation is so diverse in the way citizenship is delivered and our work spans across the city of Hull. We work with many partner organisations. Our delivery started off as Youth Service delivery but due to the Lifelong Learning restructure we are now in a position to promote and deliver active citizenship activities across the City of Hull.

As a youth service our core business is to promote voluntary participation and through this comes the promotion of 'voice & influence' to ensure every young person feels valued and plays an active part in the shaping of our services.

We intially engage young people into active citizenship by working from their starting point and what is relevant to their lives and communities. This may be through involvement in participating in the running of their local youth centre right through to being involved in local government issues.

We have a Post-16 Citizenship Steering Group which consists of what was Hull Youth Service, Hull Itec Training, HYA Training and Hull CVS.

We offer staff training and development on delivering active citizenship and have a certification route which young people can develop and progress. Young people work on a Post-16 Citizenship Portfolio which we have developed to enable progression. Upon completion young people are then awarded a Hull Citizenship Certificate which is now recognised across the city.

Citizenship coordinator's top tips for setting up post-16 citizenship activity:

  • Ensure consistency in quality delivery by training staff. We use the OCN Level 2 qualification.
  • Work from young people's interests and starting points to ensure they are onboard from the start and enable ownership of process.
  • Work in partnership with other agencies and organisations.
  • Create a progression route for learners. We have a process where we monitor recorded outcomes and accredited outcomes.
  • Make the learning process as fun, creative and as interesting as possible not all young people want to learn about politics but there are other ways of intially engaging young people in citizenship activity to work towards political engagement. Trips to other cities to compare and contrast has always been beneficial.

How this organisation could help you:

We would be prepared to offer shadowing opportunities to staff from other organisations and any form of over the telephone communication about our delivery.
