Regent College

Post-16 Citizenship activity at Regent College

Regent College defines itself as a Global Citizens College, a place where citizenship is integrated into all 3 levels of study at the college. At level one, students are involved in a full day of citizenship activities presented in conjuction with Leicester University Centre for citizenship Studies.

At level 2 students take part in an open space debate, exploring  topics decided within  the tutor groups and leading to volunteer activity, where students respond actively to the issues raised. Students endeavours are rewarded with an OCN qualification in citizenship.

At Level 3 we offer both OCR General Studies and are piloting the AQA Active Citizenship Pilot qualification with over a hundred learners. Students are also encouraged to volunteer in and beyond the college and to gain accreditation through Millennium Volunteers.

Finally we also have a lecture and discussion programme open to all students which compliments much of the issue based work undertaken at all levels. If students follow all 3 strands of the citizenship offer at L3- attendance and involvement with the lecture and disussion programme, the undertaking of a level three extended studies A Level and volunteering they will achieve accrediataion through Leicester University Centre for citizenship.

Citizenship coordinator's top tips for setting up post-16 citizenship activity:

  • Ensure citizenship activity is central to the post-16 programme and that learners are contribute to shaping the programme, so that it reflects their concerns rather than yours.
  • Ensure citizenship informs part of the application process- that what you offer is unique and beneficial and students are clear from application that the programme you offer will be an an integral part of the Sixth Form or College experience.
  • Ensure senior management are on board, are informed and are clear what the benefits of citizenship are for the learner and the organisation.
  • Be organised; plan and inform students of activities and events months in advance, use bulletins, calendars, inform parents, newsletters. Be as systematic as possible and celebrate all success in college and through the media.
  • Develop links with like-minded colleagues; work with other staff to affect activities. Train staff and where delivery is dependent on a staff team appraise, review and evaluate.

How this organisation could help you:

We would be happy to support colleagues in the integration of Citizenship as part of a post-16 offer, to help with planning, strategy and implementation. We would share with others our experience of being involved in the AQA Active Citizenship Pilot and The Open Space programme.

We would be keen to welcome other colleges here, to involve staff and students in exchange programmes, especially with a focus on diversity and inclusion.

The lecture and discussion  programme we offer is open to staff and learners from other organisations.

Finally, we are keen to make links with other organisations to allow opportunities for voluntary work with other groups of students and we welcome involvement with other organisations pursuing similar initiatives.
