Whalley Range High School for Girls
Post-16 Citizenship activity at Whalley Range
There are four key strands to the citizenship provision at Whalley Range High School, as follows:
- Taught ctitizenship through the sixth form tutorial sessions - each tutor group has one hour/week of taught time with their tutor and some of this is dedicated to citizenship learnoing around the themes of democracy and cultural diversity.
- Collapsed timetable event days - various themes have been used so far, such as - refugees and asylum seekers debate; Crime & Justice, role play; Your Issues debate - issues chosen by the young people themselves.
- The sixth form Action Committee - a council/forum with representatives from each form group discussing and acting upon issues that they deem of concern to them.
- Volunteering - a variety of voluntary activities, some of which contribute to Millenium volunteer points, including Peer Mediation, Mentoring (litearcy, numeracy) and community volunteering with a focus on making a contribution.
Citizenship coordinator's top tips for setting up post-16 citizenship activity:
- Get and keep all delivery staff fully involved - full training and consultation
- Always use ice breaker activities - fun and engaging
- Use the young people as the key resource - they know what issues are of most concern to them
- Keep activities active - "they experience/do and they learn"!
- Get support from your senior management team- resources, time, ethos
