Activities for use with learners
Choose from the activities below for use with young people to explore citizenship issues. These activities have been developed by projects within the Post-16 Citizenship Development Programme.
College politics
This role-play activity was preceded by some work based on the Student Union elections at
Richmond-upon-Thames College, focusing on questions such as its role, purpose
as well as the advantages of having a students' union. Its aim was to raise awareness
of the political process and into wider issues concerning political literacy.
Baseline reflection activity
This activity was developed to discover young people's experiences and
understandings of citizenship, and to introduce some of the key Citizenship
concepts and skills.
A school self-evaluation tool for citizenship education
is also available for school leaders and citizenship co-ordinators to chart progress systematically in developing citizenship education in their own school.

Exploring issues of Social Justice
Designed by Ted Huddlestone, Citizenship Foundation, to help young people explore ideas of social justice, understand
political ideas and arguments and learn how to apply them to current
issues, local, national and international.
What is Active Citizenship?
This activity uses case studies to help participants focus on the nature of 'active citizenship' and
how far activities or programmes can provide opportunities to develop skills, knowledge and values.
Cloning - Where do you draw the line?
This activity is part of a suite of activities used in one of the pilot projects to promote awareness of key social
issues for young people.
Cultural Diversity Table
Devised by Whalley Range High School to explore issues of cultural diversity by
developing understanding of different cultures.
Exploring Democracy
Devised by Whalley Range High School to provide an introduction to democracy and
democratic decision making.

Teaching and learning activity from Richmond-upon-Thames College exploring understandings of the community within the college.
Model United Nations
An evaluation of an activity for Year 10 and Year 13 students who role-played
country delegates in a Model United Nations General Assembly on the issues of
child labour and refugees at Grey Coats Hospital School.
