Anti-discrimination programme

This anti-discrimination project was organised by staff at New Heys Community School in Liverpool with students involved learning about their own family tree and international background, about cultural and social migration. Students also learnt about how racism and discrimination affects people. Students were also trained with skills which gave them the opportunity to deliver peer mentor lessons to year 7 and 8 students about racism and discrimination.

Staff involved reported that the peer delivered sessions were very powerful. The younger students really benefited from the sessions delivered by sixth formers, whom they see around school and the community on a social level. The students delivering the sessions really had a feel on who they are, where their family descend from and about the damaging affects of discrimination. These students’ confidence levels dramatically increased when given ownership and empowerment of the sessions. Their self-esteem and knowledge of this area were given a great boost.
