Review of: "The Real Picture: Citizenship through photography" resource

Review: The scheme of work was used in year 12 tutorials as a creative way of stimulating discussion on citizenship issues. Students learned about different photographic techniques which helped them analyse the techniques used in the photographs that came in the pack. They are now taking pictures of citizenship issues that mean something to them.

I have found the whole package to be a breath of fresh air. Students are able to express their opinions in a new medium that was not previously available to them and highlight issues that they might not otherwise be able to talk about.

Review: This conference was extremely useful as it made me aware of my own sense of identity. It was also hugely revealing as I learnt a great deal about how people can be judged on their appearance or on the symbols they display – ie – a flag. I was quite shocked by my own gut reactions to people’s dress as I had always presumed I was open minded and non judgemental. It was fascinating to hear the thoughts of others on race and identity.

Review: The conference was a chance to see what was happening in Manchester and the surrounding areas in relation to citizenship. What came out of the conference and something which I found very inspiring was the input and activities that the young people of the city are doing, not only in Manchester but linking to young people in other countries.

Seeing and learning about the activities that are going on really gave an idea as to where the education of citizenship is going, and from the look of it, it is a very positive place.

The conference was very interesting and in a very relaxed atmosphere and as a relative newcomer to the subject not only gave me a fantastic insight into the subject but also a taste of what is possible in regards to this part of education.
