Six young people on ISSP Orders were introduced to citizenship issues through a flash card activity which enabled them to identify an area for investigation. They selected rights on arrest as an issue they wanted to investigate further. Using a range of activities including a 'stop and search' quiz (see answers) and a 'know your rights' quiz (see answers), the staff enabled the young people to learn more about rights and responsibilities, and prepared them for the making of a documentary on the subject, working with Youth Culture Television (YCTV). The team learned about camera operation skills, editing skills and storyboarding. During the filming they interviewed a chief inspector with responsibility for stop and search in the borough, a local solicitor who has expertise in stop and search, members of the public for ‘vox pop’ clips, and they filmed themselves doing role play of dos and don’ts. The young people have learned new skills and knowledge, and have been able to express their own views through the DVD.
