Glen Parva Young Offender Institution
Glen Parva set up PAR (Parva Against Racism) in July 2004 to develop an environment free from racist intimidation, harassment and abuse, by raising awareness, challenging racism, promoting respect and encouraging a community ethos. The approach was through a mix of activities, workshops and debates, and centred particularly on sport as a means of bringing people together. The citizenship project was planned to be a further development of PAR. However, because of considerable restructuring and staff changes, the project was not entirely completed. The PE Department and the Education Department, worked with15 young offenders undertaking the OCN Football Skills course within the PE Department, in preparation for a football match against the Global All-Stars - a team, based in Leicester, consisting of ex-refugees and asylum-seekers. During the preparation period, the education department carried out work with the group of young offenders, investigating the countries of origin of the Global All-Stars, finding out what it means to be an asylum-seeker (using materials such as ‘Escape to Safety’ and producing a display of their work to exhibit in the gym and to inform the young people’s discussion with the Global All-Stars players. Sadly, the match itself did not occur, but plans are in place for this to happen at a later date.
