'No More Excuses – how everyone can deliver post-16 citizenship' focus event
The idea for a twilight training event called 'No More Excuses – how everyone can deliver post-16 citizenship' originally stemmed from a discussion among a South-East-based local liaison group of practitioners where it was felt that the group needed a focus event, which would bring everyone together to network and to share ideas and experiences. The event took place on 3 July 2007 and included four presentations from local organisations which use citizenship education within their programmes of delivery. See event flyer for further details. The organisations were as follows:
- Youth@Act (Drugs Awareness)
- Aylesbury Youth Action
- The Bucks Youth and Community Service
- Aylesbury Development Education Centre (ADEC)
Brenda Dean, South East Regional Network Leader opened the event with a discussion on the Post-16 Citizenship Support Programme. Some of the thirty delegates were new to the support programme and in many ways citizenship education itself. Brenda was followed by the four organisations’ presentations, which were very active, informative but also very different:
Steve Fox and Dale Groves from Youth@Act started the presentations with information on how to deliver citizenship through the arts and sports, linking closely to drugs related issues. The presentation featured a short DVD on a recent showcase which involved young people from across Buckinghamshire participating in drama, dance and music activities.
Youth@Act were followed by a presentation from Aylesbury Youth Action on citizenship and volunteering. Simon Garwood and Sarah Butler delivered an activity which required the event participants to think of ways of incorporating volunteering into their organisations’ programmes.
Graham Taylor Paddock from Buckinghamshire Youth Service presented a DVD and a talk on an intergeneration project which involved young people working with older people within the community on a 2nd World war project.
Finally Tabi Hashmi Culleem from Aylesbury Development Education Centre (ADEC), delivered a range of active activities on Global awareness, racism and discrimination that could be used within the classroom.
All presentations included opportunities for question and answer at the end. At the end of the presentations the various organisations had the opportunity to network with one another and to join the local liaison group, in the next academic year.
The delegates were asked to record their comments on the presentations and how they could incorporate citizenship within their organisation. Comments included:
