Stoke Heath Young Offender Institution

Education staff at Stoke Heath have been using the Open College Network Citizenship specification for some time, teaching citizenship at levels 1, 2 and Entry. As part of their citizenship development project, they worked with 14 young people, using a scheme of work based on an OCN new unit at Entry 3 level, on Understanding Diversity. This includes an exploration of similarities and differences within groups, different forms of communication, the role of individuals in promoting tolerance, and the difficulties resulting from a non-acceptance of diversity in a diverse world. The students carried out surveys within the department and analysed results which they made into display materials. They mounted an exhibition of their findings and of posters that they created. The work will continue with two more groups of young offenders, and the staff intend to invite speakers in to the prison to enhance the programme.
