Learner voice strategy event - conducting research through electronic voting

Learner voice strategies were the subject of a piece of research undertaken by two West Midlands-based post-16 citizenship champion members of staff. Adrian Newman from Youthcomm and Donna Pender from Warwickshire College set out to gather views on the current thinking in a variety of organisations regarding learner voice strategy using electronic handset voting technology.

Using the ‘Hear by Right’ criteria questions were prepared for use at a West Midlands regional network meeting. The questions were also mapped to LSC guidelines for developing a learner involvement strategy. A planning group helped to refine and agree the questions for two sessions at the event.

The structure of the questions were sectioned into two parts with the first being a warm up activity to enable the delegates to become familiar with the use of the technology. The second and longer session was delivered at the end of the programme to capture delegates view points after the workshops and key note speakers. A presentation at the network meeting emphasised the benefits of interactive participatory activities such as electronic handset voting.

The results from the voting were converted into a report highlighting key themes that was presented at an further West Midlands event. A dedicated session enabled network members to view, discuss and reflect on the results including charts and tables demonstrating responses to questions. The presentation helped to raise awareness of the views on learner voice across the region as well as the new requirements on providers to develop learner involvement strategies.
