Review of: LSN The real picture: citizenship through photography

Review: We have been teaching Active Citizenship to Skillbuilder students for about four years and we are always looking for new ways to engage our learners into the real meaning of citizenship. The learners are at Entry Level mostly - the way we teach citizenship has to aid their understanding and engage them in Active Citizenship. We had the idea for Town Views from a Citizenship day I attended called Reaching Out: how active citizenship can engage hard to reach learners, I picked up a pack which was an idea for a project on using photography to showcase citizenship issues in the local area. The learners really enjoyed working in small groups and going to different areas of Leamington to take the pictures, it was important for us to ensure that all of the pictures were taken by the student themselves and the subjects were their own ideas. Each learner chose two pictures each which they thought highlighted citizenship today. We then spent a lively and fun session choosing appropriate titles for the pictures, titles that we hoped would provoke interest and thought as to the story behind the pictures and would engage both the students and the people coming to see the pictures. We felt that this project was a great success, I have heard other tutors from other establishments say that entry level students such as ours cannot understand the concept of citizenship, this has not been our experience, by being innovative and trying out new ideas the learners were able to understand local citizenship within the local area.

Review: The citizenship statement cards in the publication, 'For the Sake of Argument' were used to encourage and explore other people's viewpoints within the group. It was enjoyable being part of the discussions and learning about other people's opinions.

Review: Used as part of AS Citizenship delivery slowly over two years. For example:
Week one: prepare for speaker using booklet as a guide, and brief note taking and discussion.
Week two: speaker (e.g. police officer, PLT chief officer, local MP/MEP) address students. Students take notes and ask questions.
Week three: Complete note taking from book and practice exam questions.

Review: This is excellent. Can be used with students and teachers. Particularly good with teachers as it provides them with clear examples of what constitutes active citizenship, what does not, and what could be done with future work. Excellent tool.
